The Cape Whale Coast in South Africa brings the coming of the whales to the Cape Overberg coastline, known as the Cape Whale Coast, every year between June and November. The Cape Overberg includes Swellendam, Arniston, Caledon, Hermanus and L'Agulhas. Hermanus is a part of this whale coastline and is built along the shores of Walker Bay near the Southern most tip of Africa. Nature lovers from all over the world visit Hermanus to view these magnificent creatures from the best land based whale watching destination in the world. Just over the mountains and approximately an hour from Cape Town, lies the Cape's Overberg area. The Overberg, meaning "the other side of the mountain" was the original name given by Dutch colonists in the Cape when referring to the land that lay east across the Hottentots Holland mountain range. The excitement of the whale coast not only creates a stir, but brings to our shores a large, intelligent and remarkable giant of the sea and the only mammal to have adapted to life in the open oceans. Whales such as the Southern Right Whale and less commonly the Bryde's and the Humpback Whale, are frequently sited along the Cape Overberg Coast from Stony Point near Betty's Bay, along the cliff paths of Kleinmond, Onrus, Walker Bay, the De Hoop Nature Reserve and Witsand. The whale coast is excellent for beach holidays and not only for the best whale spotting opportunities, being the nursery of the Southern Right whales. |
