For five consecutive years, the private twenty thousand-hectare Shamwari Game Reserve has received numerous international awards, including the World's Leading Conservation Company and Game Reserve. That's because Shamwari, which today has five ecosystems, is about conserving a vanishing way of life. It's the realisation of one man's dream and the success of many people's passions. The actress and conservationist Virginia McKenna's Born Free Foundation is part of this passion, and is successfully drawing the world's attention via education and public awareness campaigns to the plight of wild animals confined in impoverished captive environments. In collaboration with Shamwari Game Reserve, they promote the protection of habitat and conservation of species while at the same time maintaining a humane and compassionate approach to the welfare of animals. So the Born Free Foundation Animal Rescue and Education Centre was born and a museum and educational facility incorporated. When staying at Bayethe Tented Lodge, you can go and check out this centre, where you will get the opportunity to see some of the big cats that have been rescued. If you're interested, you can also sign up as a volunteer and work alongside Shamwari Game Reserve's game rangers and Wildlife Department, which has a breeding centre, an education centre and an anti-poaching unit. This department is the proud winner of the Global Nature Fund Award for Best Conservation Practice, and Dr Johan Joubert, the Wildlife Director, is one of South Africa's Top Ten Conservationists, as voted by the Endangered Wildlife Trust.
