The North West Province is not in fact situated in the west of South Africa but lies west of the major population centres of Gauteng and Kwazulu-Natal. It's an important mining hub which produces the vast majority of the country's platinum. As a result, it's been dubbed the Platinum Province.

The province is a major heritage destination, home to the breathtaking Pilanesberg National Park, containing some of the world's most extraordinary geological sites, and the Magaliesberg National Park which has been declared a World Heritage site.

The Pilanesberg National Park boasts virtually every mammal species of Southern Africa, and accommodates over seven thousand animals including the Big Five. It's one of the biggest game parks in South Africa and covers an area of fifty five thousand hectares. The park is also an important starting point for those interested in human history, having various sites dating back to the Stone and Iron Age.

The Magaliesberg National Park is a treasure trove of archeological sites and is thought to be one of the oldest mountains on earth. At the foot of the mountains lies the Cradle of Humankind, where the famous skull of Mrs. Ples was found. The skull of the remarkable Taung child was found in the nearby town of the same name.
