The Malaria free Madikwe Game Reserve is a 75 000 hectare reserve restored from farmland to its natural environment. It is situated in the far north of the North West Province, adjacent to the Botswana border. The largest ever translocation of game occurred when 10 000 animals of 27 species were moved to Madikwe in Operation Phoenix. These included the big five and other endangered species such as the Wild Dog and Cheetah. The entire reserve has been enclosed in a 150km perimeter fence which has been electrified to prevent the escape of elephants and the larger predators. Guests are taken on conducted day and night game drives or bush walks. Excellent accommodation is available at various private lodges in the reserve. There are no day visitor facilities; only residents at a lodge may enter the reserve. Madikwe, now one of South Africa's prime safari destinations is three hours drive from Pretoria or Johannesburg. |
