Limpopo

Limpopo, the Great North, is a magical place of cultural diversity, ancient baobabs, lush wooded mountain valleys and scorching bushveld. Named after the great Limpopo River that creates its northern border, Limpopo is flanked by Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Botswana, making it the perfect entrance into Africa.

Spectacular mountain scenery beckons hikers, climbers and bikers with water falls, woody slopes and hot mineral springs. The Drakensberg Mountain begins its first swell in Limpopo and stretches over 200 kilometres into Kwazulu Natal. The Soutpansberg, which means ‘Salt Pan Mountain’, of the western Vhembe region is best explored by following one of the many forest trails. This is the ‘land of legend’ and lays claim to a sacred lake, Lake Fundudzi, and a holy forest where ancient ways are still revered by traditional vhaVenda culture.

In the Vhembe region, vast expanses of indigenous bush are awash with the vivid colour of blue skies, a proliferation of over 300 species of birds takes flight and the world´s highest concentration of leopard roams freely. Game viewing in Limpopo is amongst the best in Africa. Abundant herds of up to 600 buffalo are most commonly seen at the National Parks throughout Limpopo. Visitors can take their pick from an array of protected areas and reserves, like the world renowned Kruger National Park, Mapungubwe, Marakele and 50 provincial nature reserves.

Gold figures, iron artefacts, pottery and glass beads that date back thousands of years have been discovered in the lush Limpopo Valley on Mapangubwe Hill. This is one of the 24 UNESCO World Heritage sites. Limpopo also boasts the Makapans Caves, one of only two Stone Age sites in the world that contain an unbroken sequence of artefacts from the Earlier Stone Age to the Later Stone Age.
