Karoo

Broad, sandy plains broken by flat-topped mesas and kopjes and covered in succulents and aloes that stretch over 400 000 square kilometres – this is the Karoo. From the rolling hills of the great Karoo in the north to the fertile valley of the Klein Karoo – or Little Karoo – in the south, the dramatic landscape will leave you awestruck.

The beauty of the Karoo´s harsh environment is unmatched and travellers will be mesmerised by awe-inspiring sunrises and sunsets where pastel shades of purple, blue, pink and gold fill the horizon. At night, the clear sky is a dazzling 360-degree blanket of stars.

Majestic mountains line the edge of the Karoo´s rolling plains with deep gullies and pretty streams. The mountain overhangs are rich with rock art more than a hundred thousand years old and in the inland town of Oudtshoorn, travellers can still view the enigmatic Bushman paintings of mermaids that have puzzled archaeologists for years. This area is rich in dinosaur fossils, many of which can be seen at the Old Library Museum in Graaff-Reinet.

The Karoo´s sleepy, small towns like Cradock showcase charming Victorian houses. Steeped in history, these towns offer a wealth of cultural attractions. In Nieu Bethesda, art lovers can see South Africa´s finest outsider art at the Owl House, which was created by Helen Martins in the nineteen forties.

Enjoy spectacular game viewing of the Black Rhino in the Karoo National Park and the endangered Cape Mountain Zebra in the Mountain Zebra Park or view over 200 bird species that inhabit the area. This desert-like wonderland can be explored on foot, horseback, by mountain bike, 4x4 or canoe and offers excellent paragliding and mountaineering opportunities.
